Neró Rooms is our family house, and it has been for generations. We've turned it into four rooms — modern, comfortable, and still unmistakably Sicilian. Past the entrance on Corso Umberto there's a garden of mandarin, orange and lemon trees. Most guests find it by accident on the first morning and spend the rest of the week there.
The address does a lot of the work. Piazza IX Aprile is a two-minute walk, the Teatro Greco a few minutes more, and the cable car down to Isola Bella is close enough that you can be swimming within the half hour. You won't need a car, and you won't want one.
Four rooms means we know your name by the second day. That's the difference between us and the hotels up the hill.
Four rooms, no two alike. Every one comes with a Nespresso machine, a minibar stocked on the house, fast Wi-Fi, air conditioning and daily housekeeping — so the only real decision is whether you want the balcony, the bathtub, or the garden at your door.
Corso Umberto is loud, in the good way — passeggiata, gelato, the whole thing. Ten steps off it, through our door, there's a garden with mandarin, orange and lemon trees and nothing much happening. Breakfast is out here. So is the second coffee, and the glass of wine before dinner you didn't plan on.
The town sits on a shelf of rock above the Ionian Sea, with Etna smoking away to the south. People have been coming here since the Greeks, and the Teatro Greco — still standing, still used for concerts in summer — is a few minutes from our door. Everything worth seeing is walkable. Piazza IX Aprile and its terrace over the sea, the pedestrian length of Corso Umberto, and the cable car that drops you at Isola Bella, a nature reserve you can swim from. Catania airport is 60 km, about an hour.
